Clair Canfield March 15, 2025
It was not long after he got married that Clair began to realize that he was terrible at dealing with conflict. During that time as an undergraduate at Weber State University he began to explore communication studies courses to try and find new ways of dealing with his conflicts rather than just trying to avoid them. He also felt a call towards teaching so after graduation he taught as an adjunct for two years before going back to school for his Masters Degree. He attended the University of Montana where he continued exploring his interest in communication and conflict. While pursuing a doctoral degree from the University of Utah, Clair also completed a graduate certificate program in conflict resolution.
Clair is the founder of Canfield Conflict & Collaboration Consulting and has now been teaching, training, and consulting for over 23 years. He has been at Utah State University for 10 years and is a senior lecturer in the Philosophy, Languages, and Communication Studies department. He lives in Perry with his wife and three daughters. One of those daughters is partially responsible for his reputation as the “hair-pretties guy” from a story told during his TEDx talk at USU that has now been viewed on YouTube over 500,000 times. Clair is passionate about the possibilities that conflict has to show us what matters most to us and to create opportunities for beauty and change.
